Krugersdorp, a town historically plagued by a negative reputation, has grappled with rising crime rates and well-publicised tragedies that have garnered understandable attention. The prevalent issues of substance abuse, unemployment and homelessness in the locality are of significant concern.
Among the array of charitable endeavours, the DART (Dominion Acclaimed Reviving Territories) Foundation has recognised the essential need for sustainable empowerment rather than mere philanthropy.
From humble origins and an inspired dream nurtured by HEF (Humanitarian Empowerment Fund), we have gleaned valuable lessons and mentorship from esteemed foundations such as HEF, Dis-Chem Foundation and others. This has propelled us towards a future focused on establishing sustainable practices that positively impact and transform lives.
The foundation’s founder, Nico Fourie, has underscored the organisation’s commitment to equipping individuals for lasting transformation.
The inaugural project of the DART Foundation involved a partnership with the Curamus School for Autism to establish vegetable garden tunnels. This initiative has not only provided sustenance, but has also imbued a sense of purpose and accomplishment in the 45 underprivileged children involved in tending the gardens as part of their developmental journey.
In July 2024, the foundation unveiled a skills development centre in Krugersdorp, offering training in computer literacy and business skills. By collaborating with Legends Barbers, distinguished as Africa’s premier barbershop, the centre presents a 12-week course for budding barbers, complemented by guidance in resume crafting and entrepreneurship.
We are honoured to also have – through our partnership with HEF – sponsored desktops and laptops, for our computer literacy training. We have committed basic and advanced Microsoft training programmes starting in September for scholars and adults.
Looking ahead, the DART Foundation aims to broaden its vocational training programmes to encompass carpentry, plumbing, hairdressing and electrical work, aligning with the multifaceted requirements of the community.
Furthermore, the foundation plans to introduce a mentorship programme wherein accomplished graduates can mentor new participants. Additionally, support will be extended to victims of gender-based violence to address the dearth of resources hindering them from breaking free from abusive situations.
Emphasising a comprehensive approach, Fourie has articulated the foundation’s dedication to not only offering temporary assistance, but also equipping individuals with skills essential for sustainable livelihoods.
Through a blend of solidarity and resilience, the DART Foundation envisions a revitalised Krugersdorp and beyond, where every resident has the opportunity to flourish. Their initiatives serve as a symbol of hope, illustrating that positive transformation is attainable even amidst adversity.
Acting is paramount. We urge everyone to get involved, whether through volunteering time or other resources. Our annual fundraiser, a golf day scheduled for12 September at Ruimsig Country Club, will be hosted by the well-known actress and motivational speaker Angelique Gerber, promising a day of anticipation and enjoyment.
