Uganda recently changed to an online visa process, which makes the application process quick and efficient https://visas.immigration.go.ug. The cost is US$ 50 and all information and documentation is submitted electronically. I would, however, suggest that you provide them with more details than required, as they will most likely defer your application and request further details such as your travel itinerary, the address and phone numbers of your tour operator in Uganda, and contact details of your accommodation establishments. Providing this information in advance, may save time.
You will receive an travel authorization letter once approved – this will be required by the airline prior to checking in and also by Immigration on arrival at Entebbe airport.
South African travellers require a negative PCR test issued within 72 hours prior to arrival in Uganda. There are also further health requirements, such as a valid yellow fever certificate. It is advisable to take malaria precaution. Travellers from South Africa will undergo a second PCR Covid-19 test on arrival at a cost of USD65 per person. If testing positive, the traveller must quarantine in a government-designated facility at their own cost.
Travellers who have received their full Covid-19 vaccinations, will be allowed in the country without further testing. All departing travellers must show a negative Covid-19 PCR test result, issued within 72 hours of departing from Uganda. Our Wild Frontiers Tour operator in Uganda kindly arranged for our tests to be taken in the comfort of our hotel accommodation. A 24 hour result PCR test will cost US$ 65 per person, but if you are pushed for time, a 6-hour result test can be done at a cost of US$ 150 per person.
There is a lot of preparation involved prior to departure, including health requirements, immigration requirements, what to pack, how much spending to budget for etc. I would therefore like to point out a few important points to know before you go:
- Pack VERY light. Your internal flight from Entebbe only allows for a total of 15 kg luggage, including carry-on luggage per person.
- Make sure to have plenty of small USD bills on hand and to research and budget for tipping in Uganda. It is customary to tip your safari driver/guide, gorilla guides, gorilla trackers and rangers, gorilla porters and your lodge/camp staff.
- Our accommodation at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest included local beers and wine and also offered complimentary daily laundry. If we knew this in advance, our luggage would have been even lighter.
- Wear comfortable trekking gear, such as supportive hiking boots, long breathable trousers and long sleeve shirt. Waterproof trekking gaiters and a rain coat will be necessary as it may rain at any time.
